Fluorescent Luminaire
Fluorescent luminaires or lights are the source of lights
which use mercury vapors to produce light. Actually these
luminaires use mercury vapors and phosphor in a combination for
generating light. First the electric energy is used to energize
mercury vapors which produce ultraviolet light which in turn
make the phosphor to produce fluorescent light. Fluorescent
luminaires are really common nowadays in homes and industry.
They are now preferred to the conventional incandescent bulbs
as they consume less energy and last long. However the initial
cost to install a fluorescent luminaires is more than the set
up required for other sources. That is usually because of the
ballast needed to provide the electrical energy to the medium
used. CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lamps) however has removed the
cost of installation completely. CFLs are widely used source of
light today as they are less expensive, more efficient and long
lasting options.
There are many advantages of using a Fluorescent
luminaire. Some of them are given below.
1. Energy efficiency – If we compare the input energy and
the output light then fluorescent luminaires are far better
than most of the sources. They convert the most of the input
energy in the form of light which is not done by the
traditional incandescent bulbs. Incandescent sources waste a
lot of energy as heat and convert only a part of the input
energy in light. This feature of fluorescent luminaire
certainly is beneficial in saving energy by optimizing the use
of it. In today’ world where we constantly need to conserve
energy due to environmental benefits, fluorescent luminaires
certainly fit better than any other convention light
source.
2. Long lasting – Fluorescent luminaires have a much longer
life than the conventional light sources. If we compare the
life span of an incandescent bulb with the one of a fluorescent
source than we will find that the life span of fluorescent
luminaires is 10 to 20 times more than that of the other. That
really helps the users to save a lot of money and energy.
3. Suitable light – The light produced by the fluorescent
luminaires is less harsh and diffused which suits more to the
eyes. The light is more soothing when compared to the light
emitted by an incandescent bulb.
4. Less Heat Generation – As we all know that incandescent
sources of light convert a lot of input energy in to heat. That
can really heat up the place where they are used. It becomes
really uneasy for the users sometimes to bear the heat
generated especially if the source is used in small rooms. In
summers it becomes really difficult to cope up with the heat
produced by multiple bulbs used in the house. Such a problem
does not exist with fluorescent luminaires as they dissipate
very less energy as heat.
All these qualities of fluorescent luminaires make them a
preferred choice by many in today’s world. Nowadays you have a
variety of attractive designs of fluorescent luminaires to
choose from.
